AlgiFilm™ proprietary oral film strips technology was developed by Biota utilizing alginates as major film forming polymers.
Alginates are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) polysaccharides extracted from brown marine macro-algae (seaweeds). Alginates form strong, flexible, transparent, odorless and tasteless films that upon placement in the oral cavity adhere strongly to oral mucosa and slowly dissolve by saliva.
The technology is covered by US Patent No. 8,840,935, titled “Orally Administrable Films and Preparations Thereof“, and by PCT Application No. WO 2021/090309, titled “Orally Administrative Films comprising poor water soluble active ingredients and preparation thereof”.
The PCT Application inventions specifically overcome the difficulties of incorporating high doses of water insoluble (hydrophobic) active ingredients such as Coenzyme Q10 or CBD in small oral film strips.
